Dr. Phil Wenk

Dr. Phil Wenk, president and CEO of Delta Dental of Tennessee, first joined the company as chief operating officer in March 1997 and was promoted to his current position in January 2000. Dr. Wenk has led the company to be named one of the 25 fastest growing companies in Middle Tennessee in 2008 and “Best In Business” in 2007 by the NashvilleBusiness Journal. The paper has ranked Delta Dental as one of the top 10 most efficiently run companies in Middle Tennessee for four of the last five years and has recognized Dr. Wenk as one of the 100 most influential healthcare executives and professionals in the Middle Tennessee area.

A practicing dentist for 20 years in Clinton, Tenn., Dr. Wenk received a B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1973 and D.D.S. from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1977. He has served as secretary and president of the Second District Dental Society and as a delegate to the Tennessee Dental Association. Dr. Wenk is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, a member of the International College of Dentists, and a recipient of the Fellowship Award for Distinguished Service from the Tennessee Dental Association. He is also a past Chairman of DeltaUSA, the for-profit corporation that enables regional Delta Dental organizations to offer nationwide coverage.

Dr. Wenk is as active in the community as he is in his profession. He served as president of the board for the American Cancer Society, and served as committee chair for the inaugural years of the Fore A Cure fundraising golf tournament. Dr. Wenk has recently been appointed to the board of directors for the Nashville Zoo and Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. He is also on the board of directors for the Governor's Books from Birth Foundation, an extension of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in Tennessee; Monroe Harding, an organization aiding at-risk teens and families; and Tennessee's Department of Economic and Community Development. Dr. Wenk served on the selection committee to appoint a chancellor for the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in Memphis, and is a member of the University of Tennessee College Of Dentistry Alumni Board of Trustees and the national chairman of the College of Dentistry Capital Campaign Committee. The current leader of the usher team at Brentwood United Methodist Church, he was previously on the church’s Board of Trustees, serving as the chair in 2003 and 2004. A dedicated family man, he and his wife have two children and two grandchildren.
